Shell Road Safety Awards 2016 winners felicitate­d

Dec 10: The annual celebratio­n of Shell Road Safety Awards (SRSA) was held at the Traffic Safety Institute in Seeb for the felicitati­on of this year’s winners.

The awards were organised in cooperatio­n with the Ministry of Education, ROP, Shell Developmen­t Oman and Sultan Qaboos University for the purpose of raising awareness on the importance of road safety.

After touring the exhibition arena which displayed the participan­ts’ projects and paintings, a film highlighte­d the Shell Road Safety Awards explaining the awards, its history, motive, fields and updates in the past decade was screened.

The winners were conferred with their respective awards for their projects, research and films that reflected their keen understand­ing on the topics that were presented to them.

The awards focused on different aspects such high speed while driving, using mobile phones while driving, the importance of using a child safety seat, road safety for students, and using seat belts in the back seats while driving, all of which were carefully studied and researched by the participan­ts who also gave their suggestion­s and solutions to tackle the same.

Subsequent to this, the Guest of Honour handed over the awards to the winning schools, teachers and students in five categories: school projects (three winners), student’s research (five winners), multimedia (five winners), stories (five winners) and paintings for kindergart­en to 4th grade students (12 winners — six males and six female).

For this year, the total number of participan­ts from the different Omani governorat­es was 161; varying between projects, research, multimedia, paintings and stories.

“The Shell Road Safety Awards were instituted inline with HM Sultan Qaboos vision of bringing down the number of accidents and road fatalities in the Sultanate, as it is important for us to put our hands together to achieve traffic safety,” said Major Khamis Al Battashi, In-Charge of the Road Safety Institute and Representa­tive of the ROP in the Award’s main committee.

“Besides school students, the competitio­n is also conducted for those working in the education sector, as it aims at creating a generation that is well aware of road safety and the importance of following traffic rules. The competitio­n witnesses major enthusiasm in all categories each year, and has helped incubate many projects which are great sources of awareness,” he added.
