DeChambeau, Points share lead

-

MIAMI: Bryson DeChambeau fired seven birdies in a seven-under-par 65 on Friday to seize a share of the lead along with D A Points in the weatherdisrupted second round of the Puerto Rico Open.

The second round, which started on Friday after completion of Thursday’s weather-hit first, endured its own weather delay before darkness halted play with 45 players still on the course. DeChambeau was untroubled by the disruptions, his seven birdies including a run of four in a row from the fifth through the eighth at the Coco Beach Golf and Country Club.

He birdied the par-five 18th, as did Points in capping a 69 that tied him for the lead on 11-under 133.

Points is chasing his third US PGA Tour title after the 2011 Pebble Beach Pro-Am and 2013 Houston Open.

DeChambeau is seeking a first, with his best finish coming in his pro debut — a tie for fourth at the 2016 RBC Heritage.

On the course Bill Lund was 11-under with three holes to play.

American rookie Trey Mullinax, who had remained atop the leaderboard after Friday’s conclusion to the opening round with his bogey-free 63 of Thursday, was still nine-under for the tournament and tied for 10th at through 13 holes of the second round. Mullinax, who got married five days before the tournament, matched the best opening round in tournament history with his lowest PGA round.

The tournament offers a chance for lesser lights on the PGA Tour to contend while top-ranked talent plays in the World Golf Championships Match-Play tournament.
