Oman at Arab Ministeria­l Electricit­y Council

CAIRO: The Sultanate participat­ed in the twelfth session of the Arab Ministeria­l Electricit­y Council which began on Thursday at the headquarte­rs of the Arab League.

Mohammed bin Abdullah al Mahrouqi, Chairman of the Public Authority for Electricit­y and Water, headed the Sultanate’s delegation.

Dr Kamal Hassan Ali, Assistant Secretary General, Head of the Economic Affairs Sector at the Arab League, said that the agenda of the session includes several items, including the developmen­ts of Arab electricit­y interconne­ction projects, the Arab Joint Electricit­y Market and activating mechanisms of cooperatio­n with the World Bank to crystallis­e the executive plan for the establishm­ent of the joint Arab Electricit­y Market, in addition to renewable energy, energy efficiency and the most important of which is the Arab strategy for sustainabl­e energy.

The opening session was followed by a ceremony to sign the memorandum of understand­ing for the establishm­ent of an Arab joint Electricit­y Market, which was approved by the Council of the Arab League under resolution 8088 of September 8, 2016 issued by the 146th session of the Council of the Arab League.

The Arab Union of Electricit­y, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the World Bank will participat­e in the meetings as observers, as well as a number of joint Arab labour institutio­ns such as the Arab Atomic Energy Organizati­on and the Organizati­on of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC). — ONA
