Vandalism of waste bins deplored

- FAHAD AL GHADANI MUSCAT, APRIL 8

Be’ah, the national solid waste services provider, has strongly bemoaned the vandalism of trash bins distributed to households in key neighbourhoods of Muscat.

Responding to a post on social media calling for the vandals to be penalised, Be’ah appealed to the general public to safeguard these bins in light of the important role they play in the household waste collection and disposal process.

The issue attracted considerable attention on social media, with some blaming the vandalism on poor awareness of the importance of these bins and others pointing the finger at irresponsible individuals. “Either way, the authorities should consider stiff penalties for those damaging public property,” said Sulaiman al Zidi of Muscat. “A public awareness campaign that emphasises the importance of trash bins to a modern waste collection process should be undertaken as well,” he added.

Mohammed al Mujaini, who also lives and works in Muscat, has also stressed the need for greater awareness on the issue. “Waste bins installed outside homes are a new concept in many communities. Let’s try to educate the general public about their responsibility in safeguarding this aspect of the waste collection and disposal infrastructure.”

Recently, the Muscat Municipal Council revealed that Muscat Municipality is moving ahead in its plan to install more trash cans in Muscat as part of efforts to enhance public hygiene. Households in Darsait are next in line to receive waste bins for installation outside homes.

Recently, around 10,000 waste bins were distributed in the Muscat area, as well as 189 bins in other parts of Wilayat Muttrah.
