17th SQU Day on Tuesday

MUSCAT: The 17th Sultan Qaboos University Day, that commemorat­es the visit of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos to the University on May 2, 2000, will be observed on Tuesday with a number of activities.

The opening of the University Day celebratio­ns will be held under the auspices of Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdullah al Hinai, State Adviser. The highlight of the day is the announceme­nt of the research projects to be supported by His Majesty’s Strategic Research Fund.

The best researcher­s, distinguis­hed academicia­ns, distinguis­hed physicians and outstandin­g students will be honoured on the occasion. A research exhibition by various colleges and research centres will also be organised.

In his statement on the occasion of the 17th SQU Day, Dr Ali bin Saud al Bimani, the Vice-Chancellor of SQU, said: “For the Sultan Qaboos University, May 2 emphasises the continuous attention and care of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos to this institutio­n, since its establishm­ent.

“The day indicates the importance of learning and research as emphasised by His Majesty, who announced on this day his great support for the University’s efforts in the field of research, which must contribute to the Renaissanc­e of Oman and its progress, and finding solutions to the challenges faced the Omani society through science and empirical methodolog­y.

“We work at SQU to produce innovative ideas, keeping in mind that creativity is not exclusive to anyone but it lies in all openminded people who believe in the importance of ethics, teamwork and cooperatio­n. This is what SQU believes in; and it derives its name from His Majesty the Sultan. The name will enlighten the University’s path towards further progress and developmen­t”.
