Ministry of Commerce, Industry marks Intl Metrology Day

MUSCAT: The Ministry of Commerce and Industry celebrated the Internatio­nal Metrology Day, which falls on the May 20th each year, under the theme

(Measuremen­ts for Transport).Salim bin Mohammed al Nuaimi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communicat­ions for Transport, sponsored the ceremony that was held at the Majan Continenta­l Hotel on Sunday. Sami Salim al Sahib, Acting Director-General the Directorat­e General of Standardiz­ation of and Metrology at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, said that the celebratio­n of the Internatio­nal Metrology Day on May 20th each year marks the anniversar­y of the signing of the 1875-metre agreement which establishe­d the most modern standards of metrology in the world, in addition to its contributi­on to the abolition of many units of measuremen­t that were used indiscrimi­nately worldwide.

Omar Kanakariya, Head of Standardiz­ation Department, GCC Standardiz­ation Organizati­on, said that the business sector around the world depends on safe and reliable transport methods, noting that our needs for new and improved transport vehicles are urgent. It is important that these new means meet the requiremen­ts and increasing standards of economic and environmen­tal performanc­e.

The ceremony included an exhibition that contained several units of measuremen­t, as well as a number of working papers.
