- STAFF REPORTER SALALAH, MAY 23

A Yogathon was organised in Salalah recently as a run up event for the upcoming International Yoga Day (IYD) that falls on June 21. A large number of people comprising many nationalities attended the event, which was held in the Sultan Qaboos Multipurpose Hall. The event was organised jointly by the Embassy of India in Oman, Indian Social Club Salalah, and Art of Living (AOL) Oman chapter.

The idea behind organising the event was to create awareness among the people about Yoga and International Yoga Day, which aims to raise awareness worldwide about the many benefits of practicing yoga. The United Nations has proclaimed June 21 as the International Yoga Day.

The instructors for the event were drawn from Bangalore in India and Muscat, while a large number of Yoga enthusiasts took part in the event with a vow to make International Yoga Day event successful.

“By success we mean more and more people joining Yoga and getting benefited from the ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice. It helps people overcome stress and maintain mental and physical balance,” said Milind Gupta, who is an AoL instructor.

He called upon people to make the move successful by turning up in good numbers for the actual event of the International Yoga Day.

“The Day is an opportunity for us to understand the value of a knowledge, which has ability to make you stress free and physically fit if you spare some time for yourself and practice Yoga daily for 30 to 45 minutes,” he said.

Another instructor, Deeba Menon, spoke about the yogic postures and explained their importance in day-to-day life. She put stress on the fact that Yoga is different from physical exercises due to management of mental stress while keeping a person physically fit.
