Seminar on food consumptio­n highlights economic impact on family income

SALALAH: A seminar on Food Consumptio­n and Economic Impact on Family Income was opened at Dhofar University on Tuesday under the patronage of Shaikh Salim bin Oufait al Shanfri, Head of Dhofar Municipali­ty, Head of the Organising Committee of Salalah Tourism Festival.

The two-day seminar is organised by Oman Associatio­n for Consumer Protection (OACP) as part of the activities of Salalah Tourism Festival.

The seminar’s programme included a working paper entitled ‘Smart Shopping and its Effect on the Consumer Healthily and Economical­ly,’ which was presented by Dr Mariam bint Abdullah al Waeli, Director of Support Services for Specialise­d Medical Care at the Ministry of Health.

Dr Awadh Shaaban, Trainer, Expert and Consultant of Food and Agricultur­e at the Institute of Food Research and Technology in the Arab Republic of Egypt, delivered a lecture on the basic food components and optimal food needs of the individual.

The seminar’s programme for today will include a range of topics on the proper planning of consumptio­n of food and health, social and economic hazards to increase consumptio­n of food, in addition to ways to overcome the scarcity and rise of some food commoditie­s.

The seminar involved government and private entities, Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI); Salalah Branch, Dhofar University, government and private colleges and Omani women associatio­ns.

The seminar targets those concerned with the protection of consumers from specialist­s and those concerned with planning and rationalis­ation of consumptio­n.

The seminar’s opening ceremony was attended by government and private officials.
