Australian company to supply bus surveillance systems for Mwasalat

Around 100 buses and coaches to be fitted with CCTV-based surveillance equipment

- CONRAD PRABHU MUSCAT, SEPT 3

Australian mass transit security and communications solutions provider DTI Group Limited has announced that it has been awarded a contract to supply surveillance systems for installation on new buses due for delivery to Mwasalat, which owns and operates the Sultanate’s only public bus transport service.

Perth-based DTI said the order was received from Majees Technical Services LLC (Majees), a local Omani firm contracted by Mwasalat to provide a package of services to the bus operator. A tender floated by Mwasalat last year invited vendors to bid for its contract to supply, install and maintain a range of facilities related to, among others, external LED panels and internal flat panel displays for its existing and future fleet of mini-buses, heavy buses and coaches.

Also included in the scope of the tender was a requirement for CCTV-based surveillance systems that will be installed on the existing fleet, as well as an estimated 350 buses and coaches currently on order.

Under its contract, DTI will supply surveillance systems for around 98 buses presently under construction at plants in The Netherlands, Turkey and Poland. Installed on tens of thousands of buses around the world, DTI systems provide overlapping camera coverage of bus interiors and exteriors, thereby giving the driver unhindered views all around the bus.

The CCTV systems ensure enhanced visibility of passengers boarding or alighting at bus-stops, while also alerting the driver to potential contingencies or situations that may require their attention. In particular, the surveillance system will be a key safeguard against the possibility of small children being left behind in the bus, recent instances of which have proved tragic in the Sultanate.

Mwasalat joins a growing list of DTI’s international clients, which include transit agencies, transit operators, freight operators, law enforcement authorities and taxi organisations which utilise a range of professional products and services that encompass on board recording equipment, fleet management systems, back-end mass storage and retrieval facilities and end-to-end managed services.
