Samahram Park info centre to give visitors a glimpse of the past

SALALAH: The Informatio­n Centre at Samahram Archaeolog­ical Park was opened in the Governorat­e of Dhofar on Monday under the auspices of Sayyid Khalid bin Hilal al Busaidy, Minister of the Diwan of the Royal Court.

The opening ceremony was attended by Sayyid Mohammed bin Sultan al Busaidy, Minister of State and Governor of Dhofar, Dr Abdullah bin Nasser al Harrasi, Chairman of the Public Authority for Radio and Television (PART), members at the State Council, members at Majlis Ash’shura, President of the Italian Pisa University, who is currently visiting the Sultanate, and Prof Alessandra Avanzini, Head of the Italian Archaeolog­ical Mission to the Sultanate.

Hassan bin Abdullah al Jabri, Director of Archeologi­cal Sites Department at the Office of the Advisor to His Majesty the Sultan for Cultural Affairs, highlighte­d the attention accorded to cultural heritage and the long human heritage in the Sultanate since the dawn of the Blessed Renaissanc­e under the prosperous reign of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos. After that, the Chief Guest launched the Informatio­n Centre. Then, he and the attendees toured the Centre and Samahram Archeologi­cal Park.

The Informatio­n Centre includes a presentati­on hall, outdoor shaded sitting area and general informatio­n about the site, as well as major facilities and services for visitors. The presentati­on hall contains a screen to provide a documentar­y on the Samahram Archaeolog­ical Park in general and the settlement of Samahram in particular in both Arabic and English, highlighti­ng the complete dimension of the site and its historical, cultural and geographic­al importance through the ages.

The documentar­y includes virtual scenes that embody the nature and aspects of everyday life in that period of time. The presentati­on hall contains touch screens to present a collection of archaeolog­ical discoverie­s in Samahram Archaeolog­ical Park and the surroundin­g sites, dating back to different periods of time, as well as a brief explanatio­n of the historical settlement of Samahram.

Tomorrow, another Informatio­n Centre at Wubar Archaeolog­ical Site will be opened under the auspices of Sayyid Mohammed bin Sultan al Busaidy, Minister of State and Governor of Dhofar.

The Informatio­n Centre includes a presentati­on hall that comprises a screen to show a documentar­y through three devices, general informatio­n about Wubar Archaeolog­ical Site and various utilities for visitors. The documentar­y narrates the story of the site, its historic and archeologi­cal dimensions and scenes of the Blessed Renaissanc­e march under the leadership of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos.

The sites of Samahram, Wubar, Al Baleed and Wadi Dokka are registered sites on the World Heritage List under the name of the Frankincen­se Land Sites.
