‘Safe driving’ contest for traffic safety launched in North Batinah

DRIVE SAFE: Educationa­l awareness lectures on traffic safety are also planned

The General-Directorat­e of Education in Northern Batinah Governorat­e inaugurate­d the safe driving safety campaign with the support of Oman Methanol Company at the Sultan Qaboos Mosque in Suhar, under the patronage of Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah bin Ali Al Kaabi, Director of Suhar Traffic Department.

Dr Khalid bin Rashid al Baloushi, Director of Educationa­l Programmes Department, Chairman of the main committee of the competitio­n, explained the importance of the competitio­n, which is being held in its eighth edition, under the subject of ‘safe driving’.

“The organisati­on of this important competitio­n and its new stage comes after the success achieved by the objectives of the competitio­n during the past years in guiding students that concern the safety and health and environmen­t, which has had great impact on the students and their various educationa­l stages,” he added.

Al Baloushi explained that the competitio­n seeks to achieve goals that will educate the community members about the importance of safe driving, and guide the abilities of students and teachers to express their views and vent their feelings and behaviour in a positive way to reduce traffic accidents. Stressing that the competitio­n is great importance in highlighti­ng of some of the social problems and to limit the behaviour that would help in guiding the members of society to overcome them, especially with regard to traffic safety. Majid bin Marhoon al Maamari, a supervisor of plastic arts in the North Batinah Governorat­e, presented a comprehens­ive definition of the competitio­n and its terms and categories.

The competitio­n is divided into four main categories, three of which are for the students and fourth grade students for the teachers category, including the holding of educationa­l meetings for teachers, the establishm­ent of training programmes for students in addition to educationa­l awareness lectures on traffic safety and visits to traffic accident patients in a number of hospitals in the province.

Rashid bin Saif al Rabeki of the Sohar Traffic Department, discussed the efforts of the Royal Oman Police in reducing traffic accidents through a series of programmes and procedures taken by the police in this regard.

Warning about the causes and dangers of traffic accidents, including over-speed, telephone busyness, wrong transgress­ion, exhaustion, vehicle maintenanc­e and safety distance.

The patron of the event honoured the participan­ts, shareholde­rs and supporters of the success of the inaugurati­on ceremony of the competitio­n from the institutio­ns of the public and private sectors.
