MUSCAT: As part of the ‘Steer programme’ visit to Oman, a student delegation from the National University of Singapore (NUS) consisting of 42 students and 2 officials headed by Dr Eldin Wee Chuan Lim, visited Sultan Qaboos University on Wednesday.

The Study Trips for Engagement and Enrichment (STEER) programme aims to familiarise students with the diverse socio-cultural-economic environment of new and fast-evolving regions through a mix of classroombased learning and experiential site visits. At SQU, officials from the International Cooperation Office received the student delegation.

At the College of Economics & Political Science auditorium, the delegation watched a video presentation on SQU, its colleges, centres and activities.

Dr Mohammed Al Muqadam gave a talk on Oman’s history and civilisation. The delegation then visited the University’s Cultural Centre and Omani Studies Centre.

At the National University Singapore, STEER programmes of are designed to be thematic and help our undergraduate break existing mindsets about these emerging regions through participation in an immersive educational and cultural experience.

Commenting on their visit to Oman, Dr Eldin Wee Chuan Lim said that the Arabian Gulf is home to nearly two-thirds of the world’s crude oil reserves and about 35 per cent of the world’s natural gas deposits. “Collectively, this region produces approximately one-quarter of the world’s oil production. Lately, there has been a renewed push by the countries in the region to transform their economies away from energybased dependent industry to financial and service based sectors.

In order to learn how Oman, Qatar and UAE are leveraging on their oil revenues to accelerate the transformation of their economies and societies, we are travelling to these countries. We would like to lean about the efforts made by respective countries in diversifying their economics away from a hydrocarbon based economy and familiarise themselves with the rich heritage, culture, society of these 3 countries”.
