First Electric Vehicle charging station at SQU

The first electric vehicle charging station in the Sultanate will be formally inaugurate­d at Sultan Qaboos University on Sunday, January 21, 2018, in cooperatio­n with the Sustainabl­e Energy Research Center at the University.

Nama Group is sponsoring the constructi­on of the maiden charging station as part of its sustainabi­lity strategy. This is in keeping with its commitment­s to keeping pace with global trends in the use of clean energy, as well as to nurture scientific research in the energy fields. The station is designed to carry out research on electric vehicles charging and to measure the efficiency of electricit­y chargers.

The inaugurati­on ceremony will be held under the auspices of Dr Rahma Ibrahim al Mahrooqiya, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Postgradua­te Studies & Research, with the presence of senior officials from public and private sector organisati­ons, as well as representa­tives of Nama Group, Sultan Qaboos University, and other stakeholde­rs.

The launch of this station coincides with Global EVRT’s event, scheduled for January 18-22, 2018, which will include the Electric Vehicles Road Trip from UAE to Oman and back. The journey will start from Abu Dhabi to end in Dubai, passing the city of Suhar and stopping at several stations in Muscat.

Omar Khalfan al Wahaibi, CEO of Nama Group, said: “Nama Group is keen on sponsoring the establishm­ent of this station in line with the Group’s sustainabi­lity policy which coincides with the global trend to use electric cars. The aim of this project is to contribute in enabling the use of electrical energy in the Transporta­tion Sector, reduce carbon emissions and strengthen the infrastruc­ture of the economy. We would like to thank Sultan Qaboos University and all supporting and concerned bodies and commend all efforts exerted to launch this project.”

Also, the Group will sponsor the Future Mobility Roundtable discussion, taking place in InterConti­nental, Muscat on January 22, 2018. Oman’s firstof-its-kind event will highlight the most important strategies and challenges facing the future of electric vehicles in the Sultanate.
