Ford Mustang California: Adored in Oman
WHEN a group of Ford enthusiasts gather together swap tales and exchange pleasantries, the scene overflows with the spirit of camaraderie. Such is the spirit behind the legendary Mustang marque that it creates a special group in Oman — creatively labelled ‘Muscat Stangs’. During their meet, the Mustang enthusiasts also were treated to a visual display of heritage cars, however, the star of the show was the Mustang California.
The story begins in 1968, when an influential group of West Coast dealers convinced Ford to produce a limited-production Mustang with unique styling cues borrowed from Shelby Mustangs and modified with fog lamps, twist-type hood pins, a race-style gas fill cap, 1965 T-Bird taillights, GT/CS side striping, and deck-lid spoiler. Called the California Special, it was built with help from Shelby and sold exclusively in the western United States, to the tune of approximately 4,100 units. In 2007, Ford built GT/CS, or California Special as a tribute to the 1968 GT/CS.
The modern California Special offered enthusiasts a unique Mustang edition slotted perfectly between the Mustang GT Premium and the Shelby GT. With great looks and an unmistakable design presence.
Powering this beast is a 5.0 L V8 Engine that’s paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission (also available with 6-speed manual transmission).
