ROHM to be lit up to mark Cancer Day

- LAKSHMI KOTHANETH MUSCAT, FEB 3

The Royal Opera House Muscat will don Blue and Orange colours on Sunday evening to mark the World Cancer Day. The Opera House will be lit up in these colours to observe the day, which falls on February 4 every year.

Oman Cancer Association’s strategy for the last 18 years has been to create cancer awareness in the community and support cancer patients, survivors, their families and the community at large. The lighting of the Opera House is a symbol of strong commitment towards fighting cancer in Oman by all those concerned.

“Oman Cancer Association and UICC would like to pay their gratitude and thank the Oman Opera House, our government and all those who made this possible,” said the OCA’s statement to the press. The Union International for Cancer Control (UICC) a globally recognised cancer control organisation, has endorsed February 4 of every year as the global UICC Cancer Day.

This year, 140 countries will recognise the day through the lighting of at least one of their recognised monuments in blue and orange colours.

The Ministry of Health, through National Non-Communicable Diseases committee, government bodies and in coordination with the OCA and the National Oncology Centre at the Royal Hospital, has managed to change the understanding of cancer in the country and provide facilities for a healthy lifestyle.
