Majan College holds 31st alumni gathering

MUSCAT: Majan University College held its alumni gathering event on Wednesday evening, on January 31, at the Sheraton Hotel, Ruwi.

There were representatives from the College’s Board of Directors, numerous employers who recruit Majan graduates, academic staff from the University of Bedfordshire — Majan’s affiliation partner, and academic and support staff from Majan.

Philip Barber, the chair of the Majan College Alumni Association (MCAA) delivered the opening address and explained how Majan believed that “for MCAA to be truly successful, it needed alumni to be represented on the MCAA committee.” Further, he announced that the second election of twelve MCAA members, by their peers, to the MCAA committee would take place in February.

The MCAA chair also thanked everyone who had made the event possible, especially the MCAA committee members.

Following the welcoming address numerous videos were shown to guests informing them of the many activities, achievements and changes that have taken place since Majan was first established. The final video ‘Our Story’ was a chronological timeline of events, starting with the College’s opening in 1995 and finishing in December 2017, when Majan became the first higher education institution to receive full institutional accreditation from Oman’s Academic Accreditation Authority (OAAA).

The Dean of Majan College, Dr Maha Kobeil, then explained to guests, specifically alumni and employers, how they would benefit from Majan’s recent accreditation. The Dean also added how proud she was of Majan’s graduates and the way in which they added value to the Majan brand through their endeavours in the work place.

Dr Maha then introduced Zahra Hussain, who started her studies in 1998 when Majan was known as the College of Administrative Sciences, and she is now the CEO of the beauty parlour ‘Tips and Toes.’

Zahra Shahid Hussain Rizvi recalled how her studies had provided her with the skills and knowledge to find a managerial position at HSBC, as well as the confidence to start her own business.

When asked by Professor Paul Burns, from the University of Bedfordshire, about the difficulties she had to overcome to start her own business, Zahra replied that “it wasn’t easy when people don’t agree with your ideas, it fact its’s difficult, but if you are passionate and believe in what you are doing, then you will succeed.”
