Elixir United, Polyeco Gulf sign pact for waste management services

Elixir United Investment LLC, part of the well-diversified Omani business house Al Jazeera International Group, signed an agreement with Polyeco Gulf LLC for the provision of hazardous waste management and marine pollution control services in the Sultanate.

Polyeco Gulf LLC is the local subsidiary of Polyeco Group, an international company founded in Greece, which specializes in hazardous waste management and marine pollution control services with operations in more than 12 countries in Europe, Middle East and Africa.

The agreement was signed by Shaikh Mohammed Nasser al Hashar, Vice-Chairman, Al Jazeera International Group, at its Al Khuwair office on Monday. Representing the parent Greek firm were Athanasios Polychronopoulos, Executive Chairman, Polyeco Group — Greece, and Dr Lefteris Chalarakis, Country Manager Oman — Polyeco Gulf LLC.

In remarks, Polychronopoulos said the agreement opens up new opportunities and deepens relations between the two companies in the delivery of services provided by Polyeco Gulf LLC encompassing hazardous waste management and related services to the domestic market.

“We want to bring the best and newest technology in the world here in Oman to keep the environment clean, especially in industrial areas and ports,” Polychronopoulos added.

Polyeco Gulf LLC, which is in operation in the Sultanate since 2015, is already a provider of hazardous waste management services to Orpic, Oman Gas Company, Ministry of Health, Sultan Qaboos University, and the Colleges of Applied Sciences (CAS). Last month, the company was awarded a contract to provide hazardous waste management services to Oman LNG for a three-year period, building on a contract awarded in 2015.

Through its new partnership with Elixir United Investment LLC, the company is also eager to invest in hazardous waste management facilities entailing the use of the latest technology to help establish a local industry specialised in hazardous waste processing and recycling with the ultimate goal of adding value to the local economy.

This initiative will not only contribute to the goal of keeping Oman’s environment safe, but it will also help create job opportunities for young Omanis.

Polychronopoulos added that the company is also in discussion with be’ah, the solid waste management utility of the Sultanate of Oman, with regard to its plans for the development of national hazardous waste management facilities in the country.

Polyeco Gulf is also conducting a feasibility study for investments of its own in the Sultanate.

Additionally, Polyeco Gulf specialises in offering marine protection, port reception facilities, and oil spill response services.

The company was recently contracted to manage a major oil spill resulting from the tanker mishap off Greece that soiled around 30 km of pristine coastline along the Athens Riviera last September.

“Around 500 people worked daily for three months to clean up the heavily contaminated beachfront,” said Polychronopoulos .

Polyeco Gulf also specialises in producing equipment for vessels, such as ballast water treatment systems, oil water separators and biological treatment equipment, Polychronopoulos added.
