Sibari was a town in Magna Graecia, founded on the Ionian Sea between the Rivers Crati and Coscile by a group of Achaeans from the Peloponnese. Today, it is a hamlet in the municipality of Cassano all’ionio. Its economy is mainly based on tourism, resulting from the Laghi di Sibari and Sibari Marina dotted with resorts, and agriculture, which produces citrus fruit, olives and rice.
The growth of the town centre was due to the reclamation work financed by the government through the work of the Opera Sila consortium, as a result of which the Piana di Sibari, the largest in Calabria, has been brought to light along the lower reaches of the Crati. Prolungamento Strada and Casabianca, and later Stombi, arose as hamlets to the municipality of Cassano all’ionio, a few miles north of the archaeological sites of Parco del Cavallo.
