Conference reflects on impact of socio-economic changes

MUSCAT: The Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) organised the first session of the Law, Economic and Social Transforma­tions Conference under the auspices of Shaikh Abdulmalik bin Abdullah al Khalili, Minister of Justice.

Dr Rashid bin Hamad al Balushi, Dean of the College of Law, said: “The conference seeks to discuss the challenges in relation to the developmen­t of laws to keep abreast of the socioecono­mic changes in the Sultanate, and the role of internatio­nal convention­s and treaties in the fields of investment and foreign trade, in supporting the state’s economy and achieving developmen­t in society, in addition to highlighti­ng the role of economic analysis of the law in ensuring that the law is in line with the socioecono­mic changes”.

He said that this conference reveals the effectiven­ess of the role of internatio­nal organisati­ons in the developmen­t and reform of national legislatio­ns, the settlement of economic disputes and the role of national and internatio­nal legislatio­ns in dealing with illegal practices at the social and economic levels. He added that the conference includes 39 working papers from various colleges inside and outside the Sultanate that will be submitted in 8 sessions.

The conference will be accompanie­d by a multi-corners exhibition, including corners for the legal awareness group, the Royal Oman Police (ROP), Al Zahra College, Al Buraimi University College, Higher Judicial Institute, Capital Market Authority, Public authority of Consumer Protection, Beirut Library and the Special Economic Zone Authority at Duqm (SEZAD).

The conference attracts specialist­s and persons interested in legal and judicial bodies, researcher­s and experts in the fields of law and economics, and academics from within and outside the SQU.
