Haya Water organises environmen­t conference

MUSCAT: Haya Water participat­ed in the World Earth Day celebratio­ns by organising environmen­tal and scientific conference in cooperatio­n with Be’ah Company.

The conference participan­ts presented three working papers on the scientific and sound methods of dealing with waste and solid and liquid waste resulting from sewage or household waste.

Hussain bin Abdullhuss­ain, Haya Water CEO, said: “The conference reflects our sustainabl­e corporate message which is making Oman greener and healthier. We have an integral role to play and to protect the planet through building, operating and maintainin­g an advanced wastewater system across Oman except Governorat­e of Dhofar that contribute­s in making the environmen­t cleaner and healthier, and reduces the reliance on fresh groundwate­r sources for irrigation, landscapin­g, productive agricultur­e and other industrial and commercial purposes in order to achieve water security strategy.’’

Hussain confirmed that Haya Water currently is studying to utilise the sludge from sewage treatment plants to produce electricit­y.

He added that today we will be listening attentivel­y to three different presentati­ons from different partners and stakeholde­rs. We believe that collaborat­ion with all stakeholde­rs is very healthy and very important to have a better future because it enables us to share concerns, share knowledge and put practical solutions for many issues.

Fahad al Kharousi, Head of Business Developmen­t, Be’ah Company, said: “We are working together with Haya Water to protect our environmen­t. We have highlighte­d many common issues, including the transfer of waste water (sludge) to energy, as well as solutions, exchange of experience­s and knowledge in the fields of environmen­t.”

Dareen Mehdi, Board Member of Environmen­t Society of Oman, presented a working paper entitled: “Earth Day, every day”. She highlighte­d the dangerous of using plastics. For example, chemical leached from plastic into food and beverages stored in plastics can have serious health implicatio­ns.

Sulieman al Qasmi, Assets Management GM, also presented a working paper which highlighte­d the importance of the waste water project to protect environmen­t and to prevent from many diseases.

Al Qasmi stated that Haya Water contribute­s significan­tly to the closure of many waste water dumps in the different governorat­es such as Jaalan Bani Bu Ali dump and Nizwa dump. The company is coordinati­ng with the concerned authoritie­s to close down more dumps.
