Kuldeep gets call for start of England Test series

-

LEEDS: India left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav has been included in an 18-man squad announced on Wednesday for the first three Tests of their series in England after impressing in recent limited overs matches.

The 23-year-old took five wickets in the opening Twenty20 international and then returned superb figures of six for 25 — the best by any spinner against England in a one-day international at Trent Bridge last week.

Kuldeep has made just two career Test appearances to date.

India’s selection panel met in Leeds, the venue for England’s eight-wicket win in the third and deciding ODI at Headingley on Wednesday, to pick the Test squad. Pace bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar aggravated a lower back injury during that match and his inclusion is subject to his recovery.

Jasprit Bumrah has also been selected but will only be available from the second Test onwards based on his fitness. Top-order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara, who has been playing County Championship cricket for Headingley-based Yorkshire, is also included in the squad. — AFP India’s squad for the first three Tests against England: Virat Kohli (capt), Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Karun Nair, Dinesh Karthik (wkt), Rishabh Pant (wkt), Ravinchandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Shardul Thakur Fixtures Aug 01-05: 1st Test, Edgbaston Aug 09-13: 2nd Test, Lord’s Aug 18-22: 3rd Test, Trent Bridge Squad does not yet cover following: Aug 30-Sep 03: 4th Test, Southampton Sep 07-11: 5th Test, The Oval
