-

WORMS: A mourning march on Saturday evening in the western German city of Worms called by friends and family of a 21-year-old woman who was killed by a failed asylum seeker drew 500 people, according to the police.

In front of the victim’s home, where the woman was stabbed on Wednesday night, the marchers lit candles and laid flowers. The mood at the rally organized by relatives and friends was peaceful.

“Everything is very quiet,” said a spokesman for the Worms police department.

Police protection measures have also been activated for Mayor Michael Kissel following a death threat, a police spokesman said on Saturday without giving details about the nature of or motive for the threat.

The woman was killed on Wednesday night in her parents’ house in Worms, where she was found with several stab wounds, according to the public prosecutor. She lived on the top of the three floors of the house.

Overall, she suffered 10 to 15 stab and cut injuries to the back, neck, lungs and hands.

Her 22-year-old Tunisian boyfriend is being held in custody on suspicion of murder.

His motive is still unclear, but prosecutors are considering obtaining a psychiatric evaluation of the failed asylum seeker.

The man turned himself in the morning after the incident and explained that he had killed his girlfriend in a relationship quarrel.

The alleged murder weapon, a long kitchen knife, was secured.

An asylum bid the man submitted in October 2017 was denied and German police had been seeking him for deportation at the time the crime occurred. — dpa
