Oman grouped beside UAE, India and Kyrgyz Republic
Oman is placed in Group E with UAE, India and Kyrgyz Republic in the AFC U23 Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2022. The Qualifiers Draw took place in Tashkent on Friday noon. As many as 42 teams will take part in the qualification and they will be divided into eleven groups. The winners of each group and four best secondplaced teams will advance to the Finals beside Uzbekistan as hosts and this is the first time that the tournament will be staged in the Central Zone. The finals of the AFC Asian U-23 Championship will be held in Uzbekistan from September 6 to 25, 2022.
The qualifier matches will take place from October 23 to 31. Oman Olympic team will commence the campaign with a match against India on October 27, 2021. The next match is scheduled against Kyrgyz Republic on October 29 and the concluding match is on October 31 against the hosts UAE.
Hosts Qatar will organise the group A matches which will comprise of Syria, Yemen and Sri Lanka, while Islamic Republic of Iran, hosts of group B alongside with Tajikistan, Lebanon and Nepal. Iraq will join hosts Bahrain in Group C beside Afghanistan and Maldives. Group D comprise of hosts Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh and Uzbekistan. The hosts Jordan clubbed in Group F with Palestine and Turkmenistan teams.
Oman had hosted the first edition of AFC U23 Asian Cup in 2014 while Qatar was the hosts for 2016 edition. China was the organiser for 2018 while Thailand hosted AFC U23 Asian Cup in 2020.
Oman Olympic (U-23) football team is undergoing a camp in Salalah until mid of July.
The 15 days preparatory camp is part of the team’s preparation for the Asian Olympic Qualifiers that will take place in October.
Oman U-23 team is supervised under a coaching staff headed by Croatian coach Dario Basic and assisted by Mohammed Khamis al Oraimi.
