Defensive interface of Dibba through ages

-

MARBAT AL BAI’A or “Marbat al Shaikh”, which is located in the Bai’a area near the merchant’s neighbourhood and Dibba market, is one of the most important defensive fortifications in the Wilayat of Dibba. It has an area of 536 square metres and was built in 1931 AD by Shaikh Hassan bin Rahma al Shehi.

Omar al Shehi, a researcher and historian, says that the “Marbat al Shaikh” consists of a majlis at the entrance dedicated to the military staff, and on the right, there is a special room for the shaikh and a majlis, on the left, there are several large rooms.

Al Shehi added that the Marbat al Shaikh has a threestorey tower, where there is a water well in the basement. On the second floor, there is a room for the military, and the third floor is made up of a room for observation. The site of the fort was chosen near the seashore, which is located near the merchant’s neighbourhood and Dibba market. Marbat al Shaikh was the residence of the shaikh, where he used to meet with people. It was also used to monitor the market and to monitor the ships and goods they carried, which were anchored on Dibba’s shore.

The historian explained that there is a project to transform the fort into a museum to be a cultural and historical centre that displays the history and antiquities of the Wilayat of Dibba throughout history. Archaeological and heritage properties are an attraction for visitors to learn about the historical and cultural identity of the Wilayat of Dibba.

Al Shehi confirmed that the fort is ready as a building, and the approvals from the concerned authorities have been completed to establish the museum. Due to the current Covid-19 conditions, the fieldwork is delayed.

It is expected that it will cost about RO 15,000.
