Two dams under constructi­on in Salalah

The Ministry of Agricultur­e, Fisheries and Water Resources is constructi­ng a flood protection system in the Wilayat of Salalah in Dhofar Governorat­e, which will also store rain and flood water coming from the mountains and can be used at Salalah Port, Raysut Industrial City, and Salalah Free Zone.

One of the dams is located on the course of Wadi Adonab with a storage capacity of more than 83 million cubic metres of water, as it is the second largest dam in the Sultanate of Oman after Wadi Dayqah Dam in Muscat Governorat­e.

The second dam is located on the course of Wadi Aanar in Raysut with a storage capacity of 16 million cubic meters of water. The ministry is also developing side protection for the port of Salalah.

Eng Ali bin Bakhit Bait Saeed, Director, Water Resources Department, Directorat­e General of Agricultur­al, Fisheries and Water Resources, Dhofar Governorat­e, said in a statement to ONA that the completion of the ‘Wadi Adonab’ dam project has reached 22 per cent, with a total cost estimated at RO 24 million. The constructi­on is expected to be completed during the second half of 2024. He also indicated that the project includes constructi­on of a dam on the course of Wadi Adonab made of compacted earth, with a length of 386 metres and a height of 68 metres.

The two dams are part of the flood risk protection system, which includes the constructi­on of 5 protection dams in Salalah.

The Director of the Water Resources Department explained that the completion rate of the ‘Aanar’ dam project is 26 per cent, at a cost of about RO 23 million later this year.
