14.5% rise in criminal cases

-

A research and study wing was formed last year to assess the motive, other circumstances behind the crime as well as the mindset of the offenders

Speaking to the Observer on the sidelines of the annual press conference, Nasr bin Khamis al Sawa’ee said a research and study wing was formed last year to assess the motive, other circumstances behind the crime as well as the mindset of the offenders.

“We have formed a research team in association with the Ministry of Social Development to study each case separately and work on it is under way. This team will identify various factors behind a crime, including the motive and the mindset of the culprit, and will come out with recommendations which help in reduction of crimes,” he said. KEY POINTS 1) Judgments were issued against employees on charges of negligence in the performance of their job duties

2) There are many fake identifiers on social media with Omani names and tribes, and it has been proved that they broadcast their content from outside the country, and community awareness exists and we count on that

3) Naming the culprit in the media and publishing the judgement is an additional penalty and a measure to dissuade potential offenders from doing the crimes

4) The number of murder cases did not increase in 2022 compared to 2021, as the number of cases stood at 13, which is the same in 2021

5) There’s not much change in the number of crimes in Oman.

Among the governorates, Musandam had the lowest number of crimes and Muscat topped the crime list (13,155) followed by North Al Batinah (5,297), Dhofar (4,228), South Al Batinah (2,749), Al Dakhiliyah (1,873), South Al Sharqiyah (1,563), North Al Sharqiyah (1,354), Al Dhahirah (772), Al Buraimi (698), Al Wusta (400) and Musandam 188.

The assistant public prosecutor said that the past year witnessed a quantum leap in the history of the Omani judiciary, with the issuance of the Royal Decree No 35/2022 regarding the organisation of the administration of judicial affairs, so it unified the judicial authorities under the banner of the Supreme Judicial Council.

He pointed out that the cases received by the Department of Public Funds and money laundering cases decreased during the past year, reaching 43 cases and has ambitious plans to reduce the number of crimes further.

“The Public Prosecution is looking forward during this year to continue completing the current annual plan and expanding the application of restorative justice within the limits permitted by the law, including activating the issuance of penal orders and community service to facilitate litigants. We are also considering approving a mechanism to shorten the intervals between investigation sessions and employing some modern technologies,” the assistant public prosecutor added.
