- JOMAR MENDOZA

The Port of Salalah has been ranked the second most efficient container port in the world in the 3rd edition of global Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) developed by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence. Yashan Port in China ranked first in the latest CPPI report.

The CPPI is an annual report that ranks container ports worldwide based on their operational efficiency. The report is based on data collected from more than 348 ports worldwide and covers over 80% of global container traffic.

The ranking is based on five key performance indicators (KPIS) including vessel turnaround time, berth productivity, port capacity utilisation, container dwell time, and time spent at anchorage.

The ranking is intended to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement for the benefit of key stakeholders in global trade, including government, shipping lines, port and terminal operators, shippers, logistics companies and consumers.

The ports in the Middle East and North Africa performed well this year, with three ports from the region finishing in the top five: Port of Salalah in Oman ranked 2nd, Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi took 3rd and Tangermediterranean ranked 4th.

Completing the top ten include Colombia’s Cartagena Port (5th), Malaysia’s Tanjung Pelapas (6th), China’s Ningbo Port (7th), Qatar’s Hamad Port (8th), China’s Guangzhou Port (9th) and Egypt’s Port Said (10th).

“In the aggregate index, the two top-ranked container ports in the CPPI 2022 are Yangshan Port (China) in first place, followed by the Port of Salalah (Oman) in second place.

These two ports occupy the same positions in the rankings generated by the constituent approaches. The Port of Salalah was ranked second in both approaches in CPPI 2021, while the Yangshan Port ranked third and fourth in the statistical and administrative approaches, respectively, in CPPI 2021,” the report said.

The Port of Salalah has climbed four positions from sixth place in the Container Ports Performance Index (CPPI) 2020 to second place globally in the CPPI 2021 report. The port has been recognised for its operational efficiency and its ability to handle large volumes of cargo.

The port has also been recognised for its commitment to environmental sustainability and social responsibility. This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the management and staff at the Port of Salalah.

It also highlights the importance of investing in infrastructure and technology to improve operational efficiency and enhance competitiveness in the global market.
