- GHALIA AL DUKHRIYAH

The Muscat Municipality has completed the second phase of the project for the replacement of the existing conventional road lighting by more efficient energysaving and environmentallyfriendly lights by installing 17,000 lighting units on Muscat roads.

Engineer Faisal bin Amin al Zedjali from the lighting and traffic control department at Muscat Municipality said that the project is being executed on five phases and began with replacing conventional sodium vapor lamps by LED lamps. The project began in 2018 and will cover all the roads of Muscat Governorate. He added that the first phase ended in 2020 and covered five main roads within Muscat Governorate namely the Sultan Qaboos road, Qurayat-fins road, Darsait bridge, Al Qurum road, November 18 road and the Grand Mosque road with a total of 7,400 lamps replaced. Another 17,000 units were installed in the second phase of the project covering the roads of the wilayats of Al Seeb, Bausher, Muttrah, Al Amerat and Muscat, Al Qurum-al Athaiba section of the Sultan Qaboos road, some bridges and service roads in Muttrah and Muscat. The specifications for the third phase are currently under study with 30,000 lighting units expected to be replaced. The third phase is in the process of awarding and bidding. More than 100,000 lamps were replaced in Muscat Governorate so far and the project is expected to be completed in 2026, Al Zedjali said, affirming that the new lighting system reduced the energy consumed by 70 per cent and lowered the cost of maintenance and carbon emission.

The Lighting and Traffic Signals Control Centre in Muscat Municipality will add more traffic signals. The centre oversees all 98 traffic signals in Muscat Governorate and controls the lights and handles reports on road lighting issues. It also conducts studies and prepares reports on energy consumption of road lights.
