Major tax cuts on electric vehicles, auto spares from July 1

- QASIM AL MAASHANI

In support of Oman’s goal of achieving net neutrality in transportation and promoting a sustainable and green economy, a number of government agencies are taking steps to enable the transition to zero-emission vehicles.

These efforts are aligned with Oman Vision 2040 and aim to balance development and environmental sustainability.

The Authority for Public Services Regulation has issued regulations for electric vehicle charging points, covering technical requirements, tariff specifications, and safety measures.

Electricity distributors must comply with these regulations, and non-compliant charging points cannot be connected to the electricity network.

The regulation also addresses the installation and operation of charging points in relation to real estate owners and tenants, ensuring maintenance for public safety. To encourage the adoption of carbonfree vehicles, the Sultanate of Oman offers government facilities and incentives.

Electric cars are exempt from customs tax and registration fees, and the value-added tax rate for electric cars and spare parts is reduced to zero per cent for three years, starting from July 1, 2023.

These incentives aim to lower the initial cost of electric vehicles, diversify vehicle options, and attract investment in charging infrastructure.

The Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology has launched a carbon reduction programme, targeting emissions in the transportation and communications sectors.

The programme includes converting public transport vehicles, increasing the number of electric cars, establishing a green refuelling centre for ships, and installing solar panels in buildings.

The ministry plans to install a significant number of public and general chargers, ensuring sufficient charging infrastructure.

The Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion has implemented Ministerial Resolution No. (45/2023), establishing standard specifications and technical requirements for electric vehicles.

These specifications require manufacturers, factories, and importers to submit a certificate of conformity approved by the Gulf Standardization Organization.

The aim is to ensure compliance with technical regulations and standards while creating new economic opportunities, promoting renewable energy, enhancing safety, and reducing pollution.

Overall, these initiatives and regulations in Oman aim to facilitate the transition to electric vehicles, create a supportive infrastructure, and contribute to a sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation system.
