MOU signed to promote sustainable waste management in Oman

-

In a stride towards environmental stewardship and innovative waste management, Al Mouj Muscat signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Oman’s waste management authority be’ah, and biodiesel producer Wakud to launch a pilot project aimed at converting used cooking oil (UCO) from its residences and commercial outlets into biodiesel.

Residents of Al Mouj Muscat will be equipped with special bottles and funnels, facilitating the safe and efficient collection of UCOS, thereby contributing directly to the production of biodiesel.

The collected UCO will be processed into green fuel at Wakud’s advanced biofuel facility in Khazaen Economic City, symbolising significant advancements in sustainable waste management, recycling efforts, circular economy developments in Oman.

Nasser al Shaibani, CEO of Al Mouj Muscat, said, “This partnership with be’ah and Wakud underscores our commitment to sustainability and our vision for a greener future. By turning waste into energy, we are contributing to the creation of a circular economy that benefits our community and the environment.”

As one of the fastest-growing alternative fuels globally, biodiesel aids sectors such as trucking, transport, shipping, and construction in dramatically reducing their carbon footprint. It provides a cost-competitive solution that supports the achievement of climate goals, demonstrating the practical value of sustainable energy sources.

As such, it represents a pivotal element for Oman to reach its 2050 Net Zero emissions goals.

Emphasising the extensive potential of these partnerships, Kumail bin Ahmed al Lawati, Vice-president of Business Development at be’ah, remarked, “These agreements mark concrete progress in be’ah’s mission to implement its strategy and contribute to the realisation of Oman Vision 2040.

Our collaborations are crucial instruments that we will leverage fully to uphold our dedication to sustainable resource management and environmental stewardship.”

Al Lawati further stated, “The implications of this agreement extend beyond environmental advantages, as it creates fresh opportunities to engage with biofuel buyers.”

Maher al Habsi, CEO of Wakud mentioned, “I am proud to announce the signing of this groundbreaking memorandum in the Sultanate of Oman, aligning with our nation’s Vision 2040 and commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050.

Our goal is to promote waste recycling and produce ecofriendly biofuels, safeguarding both the environment and community health.

This partnership exemplifies the potential of local companies to drive positive change, and we thank the management of Al Mouj Muscat and be’ah for their trust and support in Wakud’s pioneering initiatives.

This tri-party pilot project at Al Mouj Muscat hopes to achieve more than the conversion of waste into green energy; it also aims to educate residents and retailers on the importance of responsible waste disposal, the broader implications of environmental sustainability, and the value of a circular economy as a driving force for a better future.

By promoting practices that minimise waste and repurpose resources, this waste management programme demonstrates how communities can adopt strategies that are environmentally and economically rewarding.
