FISU World University Championship concludes in Muscat

The thrilling action of International University Sports Federation (FISU) World University Championships Cross Country (Muscat 2024) concluded in Muscat, after two days of thrilling competitions at the Military Technological College. with participants of more than 200 athletes representing 21 nations took part in the World University Championships.

The conclusion ceremony was held on Sunday under auspices of Dr Bakhait bin Ahmed al Mahri, Under-secretary of the

Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation for Higher Education, in presence of Leonz Eder, FISU President, Dr Salim al Oraimi, Chairman of Oman Committee of University Sports (OCUS) and officials. The chief guest delivered the medals to the top athletes in different categories.

At the team’s classification for women, athletes of Great Britian claimed the gold medal, while Spanish athletes received the silver medals, the South African athletes got the bronze medals.

In the Men’s team classification, French athletes topped the podium with gold medals, while Spain athletes came second with silver medals, Great Britain finished third to receive the bronze medals.

South African athlete managed to finish the short course in 7 minutes and 58 seconds to emerge champion and bag the gold medal, his teammate Christopher Liam Swart was second as he ended the race within a timing of 8 minutes and 1 second to get the silver medal, also Spanish athlete Adam Maijo Frigola received the bronze medal after clocking a similar timing of the runners up with minor difference in the timing.

In the Women’s short course category, Simonay Weitsz from South Africa emerged champion as she completed the race within 9 minutes and 14 seconds, followed by Spanish athlete Marta Serrano Azpiazu who registered a timing of 9 minutes and 17 seconds, Bethan Morley of Great Britian received the bronze medal after completing the race within 9 minutes and 18 seconds.

In Men’s long course event, Seth Akampa of Uganda topped the men’s section after registering a time of 29 minutes and 12 seconds, Spanish athlete Miguel Baidal Marco came in second with a timing of 29 minutes and 23 seconds, while Baptiste from France finished third with a time of 29 minutes and 26 seconds.

In the same category for Women, Maria Mailula of South Africa led the race after completing the race within a time of 34 minutes and 03 seconds, while Alice Goodall from Great Britian came second with a time of 34 minutes and 14 seconds, the Japanese athlete Haruka Ogawa finished in third within a time of 34 minutes and 22 seconds.
