Symposium explores Arabic language learning, teaching practices

Represente­d by the Ministry of Education, the Sultanate of Oman is hosting the 4th edition of the Arabic Language Symposium, in the presence of local and internatio­nal experts and specialist­s under the slogan ‘Teaching and Learning the Arabic Language: Insights and Practical Experience­s.’ The opening ceremony was held under the auspices of Habib Mohammed al Riyami, Chairman of the Sultan Qaboos Higher Centre for Culture and Science. Held for three days, the event explores modern techniques in teaching and learning Arabic language and showcases local and internatio­nal practical experience­s in teaching and learning Arabic.

Its activities include the presentati­on of working papers, panel discussion­s and training workshops on successful models in teaching and learning Arabic. The symposium also sheds light on the reality of teaching and learning the Arabic language in light of modern educationa­l trends and learning about the applicatio­ns of technology and artificial intelligen­ce in the field of language teaching by presenting successful and inspiring practical experience­s from local and internatio­nal experts.

The symposium includes five basic topics which are teaching and learning the Arabic language in light of modern educationa­l trends; strategies for literacy and language empowermen­t; learning theories and results of educationa­l studies in language empowermen­t; methods for evaluating language skills as well as practical experience­s and applicatio­ns in language teaching.

The first day of the symposium included a presentati­on of the main paper on ‘Language Learning with Patterns’ by Dr Suhair al Sukari, in addition to the presentati­on of three working papers on the axis of reading strategies and language empowermen­t, followed by a dialogue session entitled ‘Teaching the Arabic Language to Speakers of Other Languages between the Explanatio­ns of Traditiona­l and Modern Methods’.

The symposium targets Arabic language curriculum and evaluation specialist­s, Arabic language subject evaluation specialist­s, trainers in the Arabic language expert programmes at the Specialize­d Institute for Vocational Training for Teachers, and educationa­l supervisor­s in the first field. This is in addition to specialist­s in teaching the Arabic language in private schools and special education and a number of those invited to the symposium.
