The Sultanate of Oman has been actively implementing projects and initiatives to enhance economic sustainability, said Dr Said bin Mohammed al Saqri, Minister of Economy.

Speaking at the opening of Oman Sustainability Week (OSW) 2024 on Monday, the projects and initiatives in question encompass efforts to diversify energy sources, improve efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, develop the productive sector, and foster investments and strategic partnerships in these domains.

Such endeavours contribute to job creation, income generation, and added value for citizens and the national economy, he stressed.

“Oman is moving forward with confidence and determination to face future challenges, and based on the guidance of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, it has committed to achieving zerocarbon neutrality by the year 2050, in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement, which are to limit the phenomenon of global warming and also in line with the goals of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals related to energy.

In this regard, the Sultanate of Oman has developed a roadmap to achieve carbon neutrality by the year 2050, and Hydrom was launched in October 2022 to organise and accelerate the development of the green hydrogen sector in Oman,” Dr Al Saqri stated.

Sustainability Week, the Minister said, represents an opportunity to showcase the nation’s progress towards achieving carbon neutrality. This event serves as a platform for public and private sector entities, experts, and researchers to exchange experiences, knowledge, and best practices in sustainability-related areas such as energy, water, waste management, environment, and society.

It aims to present a holistic vision for the future of energy considering scientific, technological, economic, and social developments. Building upon the success of the previous editions, Oman Sustainability Week aims to address pertinent issues concerning sustainability and the imperative to reconcile economic growth, social integration, and environmental protection. It underscores Oman’s commitment to strategic frameworks aimed at steering the nation towards a prosperous and stable future.

Oman Sustainability Week, he stressed, will facilitate the exchange of experiences in tackling challenges such as global warming, environmental degradation, and the depletion of natural resources.

The event comprises various activities including the Oman Sustainability Week Awards, an international conference on sustainability resources and technology, a specialised exhibition, an intellectual leaders’ summit, and field visits to sustainability projects within Oman.
