Rise in electrical fires in Oman

MUSCAT: Electrical faults are among the most common causes of fires in Oman, as there was a reported increase in electrical fires in the summer of 2015, compared to 2014, according to the Public Authority of Civil Defence and Ambulance (PACDA).

“Regardless of the many benefits of electricity and its importance in the life of individuals and communities, it poses extreme danger to lives and properties,” said PACDA.

“It may even cause fires when used improperly and not abiding by safety requirements,” they add- ed. According to data from PACDA, 250 electrical equipment fires occurred in 2015, compared to 218 in 2014. Additionally, 294 fires occurred in 2013, 2012 saw 287 fires, while 210 fires were registered in 2011. A breakdown of electrical equipment fires in 2015 shows that 169 generators and power lines caught fire, while 78 street lights caught on fire. Devices and power tools only registered 3 incidents, according to PACDA data.

“Overloading electrical switches, lack of periodical maintenance for electrical equipment and using duplicate electrical equipment are among the causes of electricity accidents,” said PACDA.

Using the wrong electrical wires, as well as not adhering to safety requirements, is also considered risky,as is the excessive use of electrical equipment and failing to properly connect a ground static electric wire.

“Do not try to fix or repair electrical devices if you are not an expert. Leave it for specialists in that field,” advised PACDA, while adding that people must keep electrical connections and wires away from passages, heat sources or underneath mats.

“Also, ensure that you do not operate devices for too long, and properly maintain the devices on a regular basis,” added PACDA.
