Breathtaki­ng mountains of Pakistan

If one were to Google the top summits of the world, one would be pleasantly surprised to observe Pakistan’s name figure on the list repeatedly. In fact it appears 23 times in the first 27 mountains. Pakistan is home to the world’s highest mountains. People with passion for climbing, hiking or scaling the summit are welcomed by the breathtaki­ngly glorious peaks.

So let us have a look at a few highest mountains in Pakistan with their heights in descending order:

No. 10 - Masherbrum:

Masherbrum is located in the place of Ghanche district, Gilgit Baltistan of Pakistan. With a height of about 7,821 metres, Masherbrum is the 22nd highest mountain in the world. The word Masherbrum means sunlight and brum means mountain which makes the mountain where sunlight never works in sense of melting the snow.

No. 9 - Distaghil Sar:

At the ninth place is Disteghil Sar or Distaghil Sar that is the highest mountain in Hispar Muztagh. It is basically known out to be a subrange of the Karakoram mountain range as in Gilgit-Baltistan. It is the 19th highest mountain on earth and the ninth highest peak in Pakistan.

No. 8 - Gasherbrum II, Gilgit-Baltistan Pakistan:

Gasherbrum II is prominent as the last peak in 8,000-metre ranking. This mountain is situated on the North West of Baltoro Glacier that is just besides Hidden Peak. This mountain is one of the best peaks to start high mountain climbing.

No. 7 - Batura:

The height of this mountain is around 7,785m and it is situated in Gilgit. It lies near the middle of the Batura Muztagh as which is the only part of the Karakoram which is west of the Hunza River. Along with this mountain is the Hunza Valley that lies in the Gilgit district of the Gilgit-Baltistan area of Pakistan.

No. 6 - Kunyang Chhish:

Khunyang Chhish is the sixth highest mountain in the Hispar Muztagh. It is defined as a sub range of the Karakoram mountains of Pakistan. It has the height of around 7,823m. This mountain lies in the heart of the Hispar Muztagh and north of the Hispar Glacier that makes it turn out to be one of the major glaciers of the Karakoram. It rises on the southwest side of the Khunyang Glacier.

No. 5 - Broad Peak:

At the fifth position is Broad Peak with the height of about 8,016m. This mountain is located in the place of Skardu. Broad Peak is part of the Gasherbrum Massif at Baltistan on the border of Pakistan and China. It is located in the Karakoram mountain range about 8 kilometres from K2.

No. 4 - Falchan Kangri:

FalchanKan­gri has been placed at the fourth place. The height of the mountain is 8,047m. This moun- tain peak is most often used for practising climbing and hiking.

No. 3 - Gasherbrum -I, Hidden Peak:

This mountain is third highest mountain in Pakistan and the 11th highest peak on earth. This mountain is located on the border of China and Pakistan. Gasherbrum­I is part of the Gasherbrum Massif that is located in the Karakorum region of the Himalaya. Gasherbrum means Shining Wall.

No. 2 - Nanga Parbat:

At the second place is the well known mountain of Pakistan, Nanga Parbat which is 8,125m and it is located at Diamer.

Nanga Parbat has witnessed tragic death of a great number of mountainee­rs during mid and early 20th century which gave it a nickname “killer mountain”.

No. 1 - K-2, Godwin Austen:

At first position is K-2 with a height of around 8,611m. At only 237 metres shorter than the Everest, K-2 is the second highest summit on the planet. K-2 is said to be the mountain with the second-highest fatality rate among the eight thousand meter range of mountains. On an average, one in ever four mountainee­rs face death who reaches the summit.

It is inviting death if an attempt is made to climb this mountain during winter. Yet scores of mountainee­rs continue to make their way to conquer this jewel.
