Dar Al Atta’a ‘Big Book Sale’ on May 6

Staff Reporter MUSCAT: On May 6, books lovers will be able to buy some of the best used titles at reduced prices at the Dar Al Atta’a ‘Big Book Sale’ to be held at the Al Qurum Complex from 10 am to 1 pm.

The sale, which is regularly held on the first Saturday of every month, will remain open from 10 am to 10 pm on the day. With hundreds of great titles for adults and children, ranging from 500 baisas to OMR1, everyone can expect to find something of interest.

Sale proceeds will be used to support Maktabati, Oman’s first mobile library, which travels around the country, visiting schools and festivals. Recently a second bus, Maktabati2 was also launched. Maktabati staff help children choose books and take them home.

“Our books are carefully chosen to appeal to all age groups and interests. We stock children’s books in Arabic and in English. The books are heavily subsidised so that we can sell them for a fraction of their original value. Children can purchase a book for 500 baisas, or bring a book to exchange,” said Jane Jaffer, Founder of the Let’s Read campaign.

Dar Al Atta’a ‘Let’s Read Campaign’ has been promoting love for reading among children in Oman since 2007.

The campaign’s committee achieves its aims in a variety of ways, by setting up play rooms, libraries and reading areas in hospitals, schools and nurseries. They also organise book clubs for teenagers and children.

If members of the public are interested in donating books or volunteering at the bookshop or for any of its activities, information can be obtained at the shop in the Al Qurum Complex.

The ‘ Let’s Read Campaign’ opened its first bookshop in the country in 2015 at the Al Qurum Complex.
