MSM index ends higher

MUSCAT: Shares on the Muscat bourse recovered marginally, after dropping for several days. The MSM30 Index posted a marginal recovery of 0.13 per cent to close the session at 5,423.26 points. The MSM Sharia Index ended at 791.12 points, down by 0.14 per cent. Bank Sohar was the most active in terms of volume as well as turnover. United Power, up by 9.23 per cent, was the top gainer while the top loser was Raysut Cement, down by 2.24 per cent.

As many as 469 trades were executed on Wednesday, generating a turnover of OMR2.17 million with 10.26 million shares changing hands. Out of 44 traded securities, 14 advanced, 8 declined, and 22 remained unchanged. Foreign investors were net buyers of OMR114,000 followed by GCC and Arab investors for OMR99,000 while Omani investors switched to net sellers of OMR213,000 worth of shares.

Financial Index advanced 0.24 per cent to close at 7,972.30 points. Al Sharqia Investment­s, National Bank of Oman, Al Madina Investment­s, Bank Dhofar and Al Madina Takaful gained 2.65 per cent, 1.81 per cent, 1.52 per cent, 1.33 per cent and 0.99 per cent, respective­ly. HSBC Bank and Oman & Emirates Holding slid 2.21 per cent and 0.81 per cent, respective­ly.

Industrial Index closed at 7,399.93 points, down by 0.18 per cent. Al Anwar Ceramics and Oman Fisheries gained 2.11 per cent and 1.35 per cent, respective­ly. Raysut Cement, Al Maha Ceramics and Oman Cables declined by 2.24 per cent, 1.62 per cent and 1.23 per cent, respective­ly.

Services Index gained 0.10 per cent to close at 2,781.58 points. United Power, Phoenix Power, Al Jazeera Services, Oman Telecommun­ications Company and Ooredoo increased by 9.23 per cent, 1.52 per cent, 1.25 per cent, 0.78 per cent and 0.39 per cent, respective­ly. Sohar Power and Renaissanc­e Services lost 1.89 per cent and 1.83 per cent, respective­ly.

Sensex at record high

Benchmark Sensex soared to a record close of 30,248, while the broader Nifty breached the 9,400-mark for the first time on Wednesday as investors widened their exposure, spurred by forecast of a normal monsoon this year.

After a strong opening, the 30-share BSE Sensex continued its upward journey to hit a fresh intra-day high of 30,271.60 before ending at 30,248.17, spurting 314.92 points, or 1.05 per cent.

The index broke its previous record closing of 30,133.35 reached on April 26. It also surpassed its intra-day peak of 30,184.22 recorded on April 27.

On similar lines, the NSE Nifty, after hitting an all-time high of 9,414.75, settled higher by 90.45 points, or 0.97 per cent at 9,407.30.

This surpassed its previous record close of 9,359.90 on May 4, as well as the intra-day peak of 9,377.10 hit on May 5.
