-

MUSCAT: Oman Data Park was the sponsor and an active participant of the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day organised by the Ministry of Transport and Communication which focused on the importance of ICT and the wide range of issues related to the Information Society.

The purpose of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is to help raise awareness about the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide.

Maqbool Al Wahaibi, CEO of Oman Data Park presented his pa- per on the topic saying, “The concept of Big Data has been around for more than a decade, but while it’s potential to transform the effectiveness, efficiency and profitabil- ity of virtually any enterprise has been well documented, the means to effectively leverage Big Data and realise its promised benefits still eludes some organisations.”

The paper urged on revolutionising a few grounds, the first of which was realising that the real purpose of leveraging Big Data was to assist in taking the right action, which would result in decisions that are more accurate in a timely, efficient and quick manner. Wahaibi calls this ‘situational awareness’ and it holds true regardless of industry or environment.
