Badr Al Samaa organises CME
MUSCAT: Badr Al Samaa Hospital, Al Khoud organised a Continuing Medical Education programme (CME) titled ‘Common Urological Problems in General Practice-Interaction’ at Crowne Plaza Hotel, Muscat recently.
The main speaker of the event was Dr P. S. Joy Jyothis, MS (Surgeon) M.Ch (Urology).
The CME provided comprehensive updates and recent advances in areas of urology-related complications, diseases and procedures. It was more of an interactive session and many queries were raised during the presentation.
The first query raised by the attendees was about the role of tamsulosin in the treatment of BPH and also calculus diseases and discussion on side effects to which Jyothis told the delegates that tamsulosin 0.4mg is the choice for treatment of symptomatic BPH and expulsion treatment of ureteric calculi. He said, “The common side effects are postural hypotension and ejaculatory problems. However, of late don’t give it to patients waiting for cataract surgery as it predisposes to floppy iris syndrome and the next query was on Cryptorchidism problem and when to operate. Cryptorchidism should be corrected by surgery before one and half years. Any delay will lead to testicular atrophy and infertility in the later life of the child. The problem of testicular cancer remains the same and has to be followed up.”
The other query raised by the participants was about special problems of the painfully swollen testis in children. Dr Joy said that when the child comes with pain in testis there is an immediate need for Doppler scan and confirmation of exclusion of Torsion testis and followed with immediate surgery. If there is any doubtful diagnosis, better to explore than postpone and lose the testis.
Dr Joy also appraised participants about the role of radiological evaluation for urinary tract infection in children and adults. Radiological workup of UTI is very important in the child for diagnosis the disease, diagnosis of a congenital defect like vesicoureteric reflex, etc. and help in diagnosis the actual disease.
Dr Joy has extensive experience in managing urological and andrology procedures. He is the first urologist to start laser Ureterorenoscopy and lithotripsy and Bipolar TURP in Kerala, India. He has vast experience of more than 2,000 ureteroscopies over 25 years. He has 31-year post M.Ch experience and started renal transplant surgery in Cosmopolitan Hospital, Trivandrum in Kerala.
Dr Grazina Boaz welcomed the gathering and as a token of appreciation Dr Shafeek, the CEO and Dr Justine Augustine, the general manager, presented a memento to the speaker.
Over 120 doctors from different disciplines attended the event. CME sessions have been a regular feature in Badr Al Samaa for the past 17 years. Management of Badr Al Samaa ensures that CME is organised regularly to update the medical fraternity on the latest advancement in technology in their respective specialities.
