Mawaleh central market gears up to meet Eid rush

Stress will be on increased imports, maintainin­g proper hygiene and checking pesticides quantity in fruits and vegetables

MUSCAT: Preparatio­ns for Eid Al Fitr have been completed at the Mawaleh Central market, the Muscat Municipali­ty said.

Muscat Municipali­ty has detailed the completion of works for Eid Al Fitr at the market, including increased imports, maintainin­g proper hygiene, and checking pesticide levels in fruits and vegetables. “Various companies, which operate in the market, are in agreement to double direct imports from countries, such as Jordan, Lebanon, Iran, South Africa and Egypt, and to increase the number of shipments to the market to meet the needs of local consumers.

“The market received 1,047 truckloads of 20,940 tonnes of vegetables and fruits between May 17 and June 5,” the municipali­ty said. Government agencies, such as the Royal Oman Police, represente­d by the General Administra­tion of Customs, as well as the Ministry of Agricultur­e and Fisheries would overlook farm products in the market.

The agencies would also ensure the arrival of goods without delay after inspecting the quality and safety of products.

Moreover, inspection teams had destroyed 158 tonnes of vegetables and fruits at the market. The management of the Central Mawaleh Market has set the working hours in the market for the Eid Al Fitr period. The working hours will be from 4.30am to 11pm starting from June 11 to June 14.
