MUSCAT: If you’ve lived in Oman, you would almost certainly know that the monsoon season, better known locally as Khareef, comes as a blessing in disguise for people living in the region.

While most of the country suffers through scorching heat and peak summers, Salalah, the capital of Dhofar Governorate in the South of Oman, is the complete opposite.

With light rains and drizzles throughout the day, majestic lush green mountains, pristine beaches, and fog, Salalah is a sight for sore eyes.

Temperatures during the Khareef season do not exceed 26 degrees Celsius through the months of July to September.

For the first time, T FM has sent a team down to Salalah to broadcast live from the southern city. Fahmi hosted the morning show “T FM Mornings” live from Salalah for the entire week between 6am and 10am.

“It was a new experience for me to host the morning slot, very different from what I am used to on the radio,” said Fahmi.

“However, it was fulfilling as I got to meet new and interesting people and experience Khareef.”

Apart from the morning show, T FM also launched a competition that allowed listeners to participate and win a trip to Salalah.

“Take off with T FM” kicked off last week and gave T FM listeners the chance to win an all-expenses paid weekend getaway for two to Salalah just by giving a reason over why they deserved a break.

Over a span of seven days, listeners sent in some very interesting answers. However, among the barrage of responses received, the one that caught the eye of the team was that of Hasna Mohamad Hassan Anacott. An IT manager working in the city, Hasna convinced the team that she was the right candidate for the win.

Working hard

“I have been working really hard and meeting deadlines,” said Hasna. “I really needed time off from my busy schedule and wanted to wind down and hit the refresh button. I am so glad that T FM picked me as their winner, and I was given a chance to fly down for the weekend to enjoy Khareef in Salalah with my friends and the amazing T FM team.”

Over the weekend, Hasna and the team got to experience Khareef at its best as they visited places such as Mughsail beach, Ittin, and Ain Garziz. They also drove through the Samhan mountain range and visited the Al Baleed Frankincense Museum, among other attractions.

Abbas al Lawati, who hosts Café 325 on T FM, accompanied the winners to Salalah.

“I visited the city after eight years, and boy was I amazed at how stunning this place is,” shared Abbas. “Beautiful beaches, mountains, and most of all the pleasing weather and welcoming people—it was a trip I will never forget, more so because I got to experience it with my team and the winners.”

The trip was highlighted by a meeting with the radio station’s loyal listeners in the city, who raved about how T FM 91.0 is a breath of fresh air in the radio circuit in the Sultanate.

“We love being able to give our listeners a chance to win big all year round,” said Garima Bhandari, Programme Director at T FM. “Our campaign ‘Take off with T FM’ gave them an opportunity to escape the heat in Muscat and get a much-deserved break from work. We were overwhelmed by the responses we got and thank everyone who participated. We hope to continue and come up with similar travel plans in the near future.”

Wonderful experience

Salalah proved to be a wonderful experience for the team, as it helped them build a strong relationship with each other as a unit and gave them the chance to explore and meet new and interesting people.

Also instrumental in the programme’s success was Oman Air, the official airline partner of “Take off with T FM,” which generously flew the team and the winners to Salalah.
