MUSCAT: The second cardiac catheterisation laboratory was inaugurated at the Cardiac Surgery Centre in Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah.

“The establishment of the laboratory comes following a generous initiative by New ATM company to finance the project. The company purchased the cardiac catheterisation device, considered to be one of the most reliable devices in the world of cardiac catheterisation,” said Dr. Saeed bin Muslim Al Mashani, Consultant Cardiothoracic and Head of the Cardiac Surgery Centre at Sultan Qaboos in Salalah.

Since its opening, the centre has received critical cases relating to various heart diseases, especially emergency cases of angina and myocardial infarction.

The centre provides specialised care according to internationally recognised standards for the treatment of acute and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases.

It also provides diagnostic and therapeutic services for heart valve diseases, weakness of the heart muscle, cardiac dysfunction, and congenital heart defects.

“The existence of a second cardiac catheterisation laboratory at the centre is very important to support the laboratory in case of a technical malfunction during emergency situations and enhances the possibility of expanding advanced treatment services such as chronic obstruction of the arteries and various cardiac valve interventions,” Dr. Al Mashani added.

The heart catheterisation laboratory is an integrated laboratory through the insertion of very thin tubes in the blood vessels of the patient with the help of an X-ray.

This procedure can obtain different diagnostic results for the diagnosis of atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, interstitial pressure or pulmonary pressure.

Rigid arteries

The device is also used to open the rigid arteries and control the implantation of coronary arteries and therapeutic interventions for various heart valves.

He confirmed, “This initiative offers everyone an incentive to do more to serve the nation, and is clear evidence that the responsibility is the same whether for the private sector or the government sector to push forward the progress and development of health services provided to citizens. We wish more success to all those who contributed to this project and hope others follow their example as best they can to enhance health services for the benefit of all.”

The centre is considered a specialised centre in cardiology and cardiac surgery in advanced diagnosis and treatment services, as everyone knows that acute atherosclerosis (angina) is one of the leading causes of death in the world, and therefore, providing treatment to patients is one of the most important achievements of any health care system.
