MUSCAT: The ninth annual fertilisers conference under the theme “New Boundaries and Opportunities”, organised by the Gulf Petrochemical and Chemical Association (GPCA) started on Wednesday.

The opening ceremony was sponsored by Dr. Fuad bin Jaafar Al Sagwani, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, who stressed the importance of the Conference for the Fertiliser Industry, which has grown over the past period and has added value and comparative advantage to the producing countries of this material, in addition to its influence on agricultural and food production which are one of the greatest challenges for the international community.

He pointed out that the national production, which is estimated at about 30,000 tonnes covering about 90 per cent of the domestic production and therefore this production is very large with high specifications and serves the sector effectively and thus these products are present in the local market in partnership and cooperation with the company has produced good results.

Announcement in January

He pointed out that it is planned to establish a marketing company for agricultural products in the future where the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries will conduct feasibility studies and there is a list of projects, especially that during investment forum in January a large group of companies and institutions will be announced.

For his part, Eng. Salim bin Nasser Al Oufi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil and Gas, said that the importance of this conference is that it is held in the Sultanate for the first time and discusses fertilisers which enters two processes: food security and the second is related to the power sector and the two topics discuss the production of fertilisers, which need power.

He said in a press statement that the presence of such a conference in the Sultanate reflects the interest of the Sultanate and the Gulf countries and the world to the issue of food security and as a result of using fertilisers to ensure food security, the number is increasing.

The conference highlights the key role of fertilisers in ensuring food security and high demand for nutrition, promoting regional innovations in agriculture and discussing key trade trends.

The Fertilisers Conference is a gathering of industry experts and officials to enhance their knowledge and provide them with an opportunity to take advantage of exclusive insights into the latest trends driving their growth in the fertilisers market. The technical sessions on operational efficiency and environmental sustainability will be provided, as well as a workshop on customer value management, the opportunities and best practices in this industry.

The technical sessions on operational efficiency, environmental sustainability and workshops will allow to share experiences and identify best practices in this important platform for the industry.

The Sultanate is hosting the conference for the first time in cooperation with Omani- Indian Fertilisers Company, a subsidiary of Oman Oil Company (OOC).
