MUSCAT: The National Blood Donation Initiative organised by the Fellowship Fund of the Ministry of Health’s staff in collaboration with the Blood Donation Services Department at the Ministry of Health (MoH) will kick off today at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The Fellowship Fund seeks to enter the Sultanate in the Guinness World Records by recording the highest number of blood donors within eight hours, coinciding with the Sultanate’s glorious 48th National Day celebrations.
A main committee was formed to implement this initiative, which will begin on Wednesday morning and go on until 5pm, for blood donation at a number of governorates across the Sultanate, including in Muscat at the Blood Donation Services Department and the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre; in Dhofar at the Sultan Qaboos Youth, Culture and Entertainment Compound; and Al Dhakhiliyah at Nizwa Cultural Centre.
In addition, it will also take place at South Al Batinah at the Omani Women Association, North Al Batinah at the Sohar Hospital, Al Buraimi at Al Buraimi University College, Al Dhahira at Ibri College of Applied Sciences, North Al Sharqiyah at the Ibra College of Technology, and South Al Sharqiyah at the Youth Development Centre in Sur. The initiative will contribute to gaining new donors, educating the community on the importance of blood donation, encouraging staff to engage in voluntary work, training and qualifying new technical cadres on blood sampling and storage methods, as well as measuring the readiness of medical services and the community during cases of emergency.
Dr. Khalid bin Rashid Al Buloshi, Director of the Initiative, stated that the initiative aims at obtaining the highest number of donor commitments within 28 days from the date of the event.
This is in addition to collecting blood units within eight hours through the blood banks of the hospitals in the Sultanate’s governorates and creating a partnership between the government sector (military and civil), private sector and the community.
