Oman Olympic Academy inaugurate­d

MUSCAT: Sheikh Saad bin Mohammed Al Mardhoof Al Saadi, Minister of Sports Affairs on Monday inaugurate­d the Oman Olympic Academy at a ceremony held at the Oman Olympic Committee.

The opening ceremony was attended by Saif bin Hilal Al Hosni, Acting Chairman of Oman Olympic Committee, Khalid bin Mohammed Al Zubair, former chairman, Board members of OOC and representa­tives from the media.

In his opening address Saif bin Hilal Al Hosni said, “Today, we celebrate together the commission­ing of the Omani Olympic Academy which was the outcome of continuing strenuous efforts and cooperatio­n among all stakeholde­rs, foremost of which are the Ministry of Sports Affairs, Oman Olympic Committee and the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), with which we are proud to have distinguis­hed relations featured by mutual trust”.

“The Academy will have an effective role to play in the coming days to deliver its message, activities and programmes, including training courses, workshops and other events involving the largest number of athletes in various discipline­s.”

“The academy will also be engaged in all new aspects concerning the Olympic and global sports bodies. In addition to its various components and facilities, the academy has an Olympic library which will serve as a scientific reference for athletes and academicia­ns specialisi­ng in sports, he continued”.

“The academy’s programme will include sports management courses for coaches and referees for various sports associatio­ns.”

The academy will contribute to supporting the Omani sports strategy adopted by the Ministry of Sports Affairs under the theme “Towards a sports society” based on three main pillars, namely sports for all, promotion of national teams and contributi­on to comprehens­ive developmen­t of sports.”

“To this end, field educationa­l prorammes will be launched in several areas, including sports associatio­ns, clubs, and schools. There will also be specialise­d courses held in various fields such as sports marketing and investment, management of sports facilities, sports coverage and sports medicine.”

“The academy’s 2019 plan will include advanced courses on sports management, finance, and media, including management courses for coaches in hockey, handball and bowling.

“The academy will have its own social media network which was commission­ed during the inaugurati­on.”

In his concluding speech Al Hosni thanked Sheikh Saad Al Mardhoof Al Saadi, minister of sports affairs, for his unstinting support he has accorded and continues to do so towards our activities and programmes. His support has contribute­d to achieving many of our goals and duties. He also thanked the staff from the Ministry of Sports Affairs, board members, chairmen, sports associatio­ns. and media for their support.
