Study to identify impact of emerging technologi­es on energy sector labour

MUSCAT: A research study to be conducted over a period of 18 months will explore and evaluate the impact of existing and emerging technologi­es on careers, skills requiremen­ts and training within Oman’s energy sector.

The research study aims at recommendi­ng strategies to address the evolving skill requiremen­ts within the Omani labour market, and providing labour market intelligen­ce for key stakeholde­rs within the energy sector.

Occidental Oman has signed an agreement to sponsor the research study to be conducted by Oman Society for Petroleum Services (Opal) and Internatio­nal Maritime College Oman (IMCO).

The signing ceremony was held at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre during Opal’s Oil and Gas Conference from December 2 to 4.

Musallam Al Mandhari, Chief Executive Officer of Opal, and Stephen Kelly, President and General Manager of Occidental Oman, were the signatorie­s for their respective organisati­ons.

Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, Undersecre­tary of the Ministry of Oil and Gas, was also present on the occasion.

“The energy sector is undergoing a transforma­tion, with a stronger focus on digitisati­on and the developmen­t of new technologi­es, said Kelly.

Future progress

“We believe that research over the future of Oman’s labour market is essential to the sector’s future progress, and will bring forth important recommenda­tions on skill requiremen­ts and future training programmes for Oman’s workforce. We feel proud to contribute to research over the Sultanate’s burgeoning energy sector, and we are committed to meeting the growing needs of the industry,” he added.

The study also aims at encapsulat­ing data that will be collected from various ministries and government agencies, including the Ministry of Manpower, the Ministry of Higher Education, and the National Centre for Statistics and Informatio­n.

The research study will collect its data using interviews, focus groups and surveys from key stakeholde­rs within the energy sector. IMCO will provide a panel of expert researcher­s and administra­tive assistants to manage the delivery of the research study.

This sponsorshi­p falls under Occidental Oman’s umbrella of strategic partnershi­ps and continuous collaborat­ion with key stakeholde­rs, and is part of Occidental Oman’s endeavour and long-term commitment to support programmes that enhance economic growth and sustainabl­e developmen­t in Oman.
