Experts share coast protection expertise

How to preserve beaches in light of the urban expansion of coastal cities is among the issues on the table at the global symposium

MUSCAT: The internatio­nal symposium on beaches environmen­tal measures and their role in coastal protection kicked off yesterday under the auspices of Mohammed bin Salim Al Toobi, Minister of Environmen­t and Climate Affairs.

The three-day symposium aims at exchanging experience­s among participan­ts in the field of beaches environmen­tal measures and coast protection, and presenting experience­s from ISESCO member states on how to preserve beaches in light of the urban expansion of coastal cities and the accompanyi­ng tourism and industrial investment­s, in addition to the discussion of various environmen­tal issues and the subsequent destructio­n of the beaches.

The symposium also aims to build partnershi­ps between the participan­ts and institutio­ns related to environmen­tal protection and support their capacities in this field, and environmen­tal awareness about the importance of coastal conservati­on and coastal environmen­t.

The patron of the event sponsored the launch of the film “Marine Environmen­t in the Sultanate of Oman” produced by the National Field Research Center in the field of conservati­on of environmen­t at the Diwan of Royal Court. The film is the result of the field research studies of the centre in the field of environmen­t.

The first day of the symposium included two working sessions focusing on the characteri­stics and areas of the marine environmen­t. The second session dealt with the governance of sustainabl­e coastal measures.

The activities of the symposium will continue today. The agenda will include three working sessions, focusing on environmen­tal education for sustainabl­e coasts.

The symposium is organized by the Omani National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, the Islamic Educationa­l, Scientific and Cultural Organizati­on (ISESCO) and Mohammed VI Foundation for the Protection of the Environmen­t in the Kingdom of Morocco in cooperatio­n with the National Field Research Center in the field of conservati­on of environmen­t in the Diwan of Royal Court and the Ministry of Environmen­t and Climate Affairs, in addition to the Photograph­ic Society with the participat­ion of a number of national institutio­n related to environmen­tal issues. The symposium is also attended by representa­tives of a number of ISESCO member states.
