MUSCAT: The Ministry of Commerce and Industry will set the terms, conditions and technical specifications of fuel to ensure the safety of consumers.

Gasoline, which is used as a fuel for vehicles, is a volatile hydrocarbon mixture, which generally contains a small amount of additives and is lead free. It can also be used as a fuel in combustion engines, motors and all engines, except for airplanes.

Hiba bint Yasser bin Saud Al Mazrouiya, chemical product specification expert at the Directorate General of Standards and Metrology of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, said: “Unleaded gasoline is classified according to the octane number to excellent gasoline with octane 95 and general gasoline octane 9. It is possible to produce high octane gasoline and may reach 98.”

She said that the Omani standards “Vehicle Fuel – Unleaded Gasoline” were approved in 2018 through Ministerial Decision No. 205/2018, which was prepared to upgrade the local technical specifications of gasoline, as well as to meet the requirements of new vehicles, starting from the 2018 models so that they meet the requirements of these new models.

This was also to keep pace with the latest characteristics of fuel in the world as the international specifications follow the course of the successive modernisation of gasoline starting from 2004 to 2012 to develop and increase the quality of fuel characteristics.

She said that the Omani standard of the unleaded gasoline has kept pace with Euro 5 in the requirements, especially in terms of the proportion of sulphur supposed to be present in the gasoline. Al Mazrouiya further said that the Ministry of Commerce and Industry was keen to set conditions and technical characteristics of gasoline fuel (petrol), in line with the developments in the design of the engines of vehicles and to suit the health and safety of consumers, as well as to give priority to the protection of the environment from polluting emissions of engines.
