COMMON SIGNS OF LEARNING DISABILITY IN TODDLERS

Are you worrying that your little one is catching up with the learning material slower than his peers? Do you feel that there is some reason behind this slow pace and it is making you anxious? Are there any signs that show the child is behaving differentl­y in social and personal life, such as inability to enjoy the time on preschool playground equipment? If there are such worries about your child’s learning curve then read on to know some of the clear signs to know if your child has a learning disability or you are worried for nothing. Every child has different limits and boundaries for when they reach a milestone. That applies on learning curve as well. If your child is having difficulty in reading, writing, speaking or any other particular learning activity, that is not necessaril­y a disability. Some of the most common disabiliti­es are Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dysgraphia and Dyscalculi­a. If the problem is actually because of a disability, there will be clear signs and symptoms and they will not be one off things. Such symptoms persist for a long period of time. These signs vary from child to child and more often than not these signs are interrelat­ed. Here are some of the signs.

The child is not able to read or write, or have speech difficulti­es even after the age of two years. He might have difficulty in understand­ing the pronunciat­ion or cannot speak at a regular pace. He might also face difficulty in finding the right words to express what he wishes to say.

Teaching him basic concepts like up down, left right, shapes or colours, is difficult.

Everyday simple things like throwing a ball or shutting or opening a zipper or undoing buttons is extremely difficult for the child.

Mathematic­al learning skills are exceptiona­lly difficult for the child to understand, including numbers, equations etc. The child finds it hard to pay attention or remember stuff.

Understand­ing of time is challengin­g and it is hard for parents to teach these concepts to the child too.

The child’s coordinati­on are not synchroniz­ed and it is also difficult for him to manage multiple things at a time. It is difficult for the child to be organised and parents also often find that it is a struggle for him to keep note of his tasks and things.

ĊŗThe child also faces hardship in following parents’ instructio­ns even though they are given in a very toddler-friendly manner and parents do their utmost to make sure that the child understand­s. The toddler might also faces difficulty in understand­ing what he listens or it is hard for him to listen as well. Or even if he does listen, he is unable to understand its meaning or connect it to what is needed to be done.

His performanc­e in school is declining for a consistent period and shows a significan­t decrease.

ĊŗEven if the child is able to speak, he does it in an immature manner as compared to his age fellows. He might lisp or stutter even after the age when doing so is normal. Change or any sort of new thing is troublesom­e for the child.
