Call to update labour laws

MUSCAT: Participants of the second conference of the General Federation of Oman Trade Union (GFOTU) recommended continuation in review and updation of the laws, legislations and regulations organising the labour market, including the Labour Law, Social Insurance Law, protection against unemployment and mandatory health insurance with the participation of the concerned parties.
The GFOTU yesterday held its second conference, during which it reviewed the administrative report for the first stage (20142018), in addition to the adoption of amendments to the statutes of the Union at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Dr. Yahya bin Mahfoudh Al Mantheri, Chairman of the State Council, presided over the opening ceremony. He said that the great attendance of the conference from inside and outside the Sultanate is an evidence of the success of the Sultanate’s experience represented by GFOTU which will enhance the march of workers in the Sultanate and achieve Omanisation in the Sultanate.
Recommendations
On the conclusion of the conference, the participants also recommended revision and updation of all memoranda on cooperation signed with the General Federation of Oman Trade Union.
The conference also recommended conducting specialised studies and research on the key labour issues based on specific statistics, which will contribute to providing solutions that can be practically applied.
The conference also recommended creation of investment opportunities for the General Federation of Oman Trade Union in order to enhance the financial side of the GFOTU along with generation of new sources of income inconsistent with the national legislations.
The conference stressed the necessity for according due efforts in the field of comprehensive transformation to eservices offered by the General Federation of Oman Trade Union and signing e-link agreements with the government and private sector entities.
All such efforts would contribute to establishment of integrated database that help taking the appropriate decisions.
