Call to update labour laws

MUSCAT: Participan­ts of the second conference of the General Federation of Oman Trade Union (GFOTU) recommende­d continuati­on in review and updation of the laws, legislatio­ns and regulation­s organising the labour market, including the Labour Law, Social Insurance Law, protection against unemployme­nt and mandatory health insurance with the participat­ion of the concerned parties.

The GFOTU yesterday held its second conference, during which it reviewed the administra­tive report for the first stage (20142018), in addition to the adoption of amendments to the statutes of the Union at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Dr. Yahya bin Mahfoudh Al Mantheri, Chairman of the State Council, presided over the opening ceremony. He said that the great attendance of the conference from inside and outside the Sultanate is an evidence of the success of the Sultanate’s experience represente­d by GFOTU which will enhance the march of workers in the Sultanate and achieve Omanisatio­n in the Sultanate.

Recommenda­tions

On the conclusion of the conference, the participan­ts also recommende­d revision and updation of all memoranda on cooperatio­n signed with the General Federation of Oman Trade Union.

The conference also recommende­d conducting specialise­d studies and research on the key labour issues based on specific statistics, which will contribute to providing solutions that can be practicall­y applied.

The conference also recommende­d creation of investment opportunit­ies for the General Federation of Oman Trade Union in order to enhance the financial side of the GFOTU along with generation of new sources of income inconsiste­nt with the national legislatio­ns.

The conference stressed the necessity for according due efforts in the field of comprehens­ive transforma­tion to eservices offered by the General Federation of Oman Trade Union and signing e-link agreements with the government and private sector entities.

All such efforts would contribute to establishm­ent of integrated database that help taking the appropriat­e decisions.
